Government gives the green light to start works on London’s first Sustainable Industries Park which will generate £500m in private investment for east London

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and Minister for Climate Change, Greg Barker were on hand today at the BASE London conference to endorse the Government’s £10m spending approval which will kick start works on the London Sustainable Industries Park.
Speaking at BASE, Mark Bradbury, Deputy Director of Development at London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) announced the Government’s £10 million approval which will enable the final phase of infrastructure on the London Sustainable Industries Park in Dagenham.
Mark Bradbury said:
‘This is brilliant news for the London SIP, east London and for the Green Enterprise District. We can now commence works which will see new road and service infrastructure, together with a package of improvements to the public realm, including sustainable urban draining, tree planting and new cycle routes making the London SIP a truly unique and world class clean tech park.’
After lodging a planning application last week, anaerobic digestion developer TEG Environmental is the latest occupier to sign up to the Park. Their state of the art facility will divert over 60,000 tonnes of food waste from land fill each year creating renewable heating and power and a fertiliser that can be blended with other recycled products to use as topsoil and reduce the demand for imported topsoil to new housing developments in east London.
Mick Fishwick, Chief Executive of TEG said;
‘We are delighted to be locating on an exemplar Business Park such as the London SIP for our first London project. Coming hot on the heels of the Anaerobic Digestion Strategy government launched last week I am particularly delighted AD is being recognised as a key part of London’s Waste Strategy and it is great to see LTGDC working closely with the Mayor and the local authority to promote sites where the private sector can invest with confidence.’
The London Sustainable Industries Park is set to generate around £35 million in receipts to the public sector and around £500 million in private sector investment. The park sits at the heart of the Mayor’s Green Enterprise District and will create the UK’s largest concentration of Clean Tech and Environment Technology Businesses. TEG will join plastics recycling company Closed Loop Recycling and energy from waste provider Thames Gateway Power on the 25 hectare park.
A contract for the infrastructure is currently out to tender and it is intended that an appointment will be made in early autumn with works commencing in October 2011. The Infrastructure contract is being tendered through the OJEU procurement route and responses to the Pre Qualification Questionnaire are required by 27th July. LTGDC then expects to shortlist around six contractors to tender for the project.
