London’s Hotspot

London’s Hotspot

London’s hotspot is EAST LONDON

Nowhere in London is there such an extraordinary package of developments.

Nowhere in London is there the scale of opportunity and the land to accommodate significant growth.

And for London to remain a competitive world city it’s going to be reliant upon east London for a significant proportion of its growth in jobs and housing.

East London is home to Canary Wharf, London City Airport, the O2 and the ExCel international conference centre. At its southern point it takes in Stratford City with Europe’s largest urban shopping centre – Westfield and the Olympic Park.

  • East London has the potential to contribute an additional £21 billion a year to London’s economy.
  • East London creates 1 in every 4 new jobs in the capital and created more jobs over the past decade than Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds or Manchester.
  • Within 20 years 180,000 jobs will be created in east London – 20% of all new London jobs.
  • Population of 2.8m – nearly 40% of London’s total.

Whilst economic activity will continue right across London, the future of London’s real growth lies in east London – the space, the talent, the infrastructure and the opportunity are all here. East London is 21st Century London.

John Williams, Chief Executive – Gateway to London

By 2030 we will have four major business centres employing a quarter of a million people at Stratford, Canary Wharf, The Royals and Greenwich Peninsula. There will be a network of new and leading environmental technology businesses. And all of these will be connected by active waterways, new parks and a network of green links. Supported by great transport infrastructure and unsurpassed retail and leisure opportunities.

Peter Andrews, Chief Executive – LTGDC

East London has terrific potential. It has superb international and local transport links, a cosmopolitan and entrepreneurial workforce and is close to the existing creative hub of Soho and the financial and professional services hubs of the City and Canary Wharf. The Olympics inheritance of modern high quality infrastructure will just add more to east London’s USP.

John Dickie, Director of Strategy & Policy- London First
